Currently a second-year student of Economics Hons from Delhi University, and looking for a summer internship at EY, Deloitte, etc. but don't know how
Running into internships which are the best fit for you can be a struggle. In order to crack internships you need to know how to generate leads, work efficiently and develop your network. Here are a few tips to help you get started: Don’t get too over-excited about the opportunities that come your way or else you would end up applying for each and every opportunity that comes in front of you, resulting in an overwhelming number of rejections. It is not about securing the opportunity, it is about the process behind it. A lot of us tend to get extremely passionate about chasing our dreams and end up exhausting ourselves in the process. The most important thing that you can do is to network. As long as it does not take away from your primary goal in life, building your network will help you achieve it. Your network will open the doors for you to achieve success and with the right strategy you can build a wonderful reputation around yourself. You should always be networking but not obsessively networking. Keep your focus on building strong relationships with people who can help you achieve your goals. Hi Raghavi, this is an issue most freshers face. The best/ tested and tried way is to look for personal connections in the family/ friends. If yes, then the process becomes easier. You can also contact your seniors for a referral or keep you posted about the job/internship openings. Stay active on LinkedIn and connect with HRs/ professionals on the platform. Stay active and keep an eye on opportunities through the Internship Cell of your college as well.
Hey Raghavi, Here are a few tips to keep a track and crack internships which include but are not limited to: 1. Difference between applying and getting selected It is not about securing the opportunity, it is about the process behind it As a fresher, I used to focus more on finding opportunities, however, this approach led to multiple rejections because my candidature was competing with 1000s of other individuals more talented than me. I realised that the trick is to stand out from the crowd. I started to put extra efforts in the work I did on a regular basis to see why, how and what of everything which again helped me in knowing my work inside out and most importantly, enjoying it. 2. Networking Keep building your network and always keep searching for opportunities but do not overdo it. A lot of us tend to get extremely passionate about chasing our dreams and end up exhausting ourselves in the process. A right balance between building your network and overdoing it should be outlined. For me, I got the most amazing opportunities including my internship with CCS at the time when I was not expecting it. 3. Brand Name Debate Do not consider a brand names as a parameter of your success/strong profile. Earlier, I used to believe that only good brand names can make your profile better. However, after working at 180 Degrees Consulting with various startups, I realised how the quality of your project is much more important than the name of the company. I tried taking baby steps and garnered a lot of experience by working with some great organisations including startups and non-profits through live projects. These experiences made my interviews very easy and comfortable as I could relate to most of the questions to a great degree. 4. Selecting between opportunities Always be open to explore new opportunities but do not take every opportunity. As a fresher, I used to end up taking each and every opportunity that came my why without doing a cost-benefit analysis. This used to lead to a lot of overworking and lesser productivity. Make sure you take up those opportunities which you think will you happy as compared to it looking fancy on your profile. Last but not the least, try to find peace with what you have and be grateful for the same. A lot of times all of us tend to chase things which are not that significant to us but the idea of it gets to our mind. I hope to learn and grow from everyone’s experiences so please feel free to share some tips which can help me and the community at large.
